About Japanese Shipwreck

The Japanese Shipwreck is a small wreck in Banyuning Bay near Amed, east Bali: a boat of about 20 metres lying on its side between 6 and 12 metres, a short swim from the beach. Its origin is uncertain, and it makes an easy shore dive and snorkel.

The Japanese Shipwreck lies in Banyuning Bay, near Amed on Bali's east coast, a short swim from the beach to a buoy that marks it. The vessel is about 20 metres long and lies on its side, partly broken up, between about 6 and 12 metres.

No one knows its story for certain. It is usually presented as a Japanese patrol boat from the Second World War, though some say it was a fishing boat. Either way, it is now grown over and busy with fish, shallow enough for snorkellers to see from above. Beyond the wreck the slope continues down to a coral plateau at around 35 metres for those who want more.

It is an easy dive, but the black pebble beach can make entry and exit hard in swell, the current can be strong at times, and the silty sand stirs up easily, so keep your fins high.
