About Mawan

Mawan is a small island in central Komodo National Park, just west of Siaba Besar, where a sandy, rubble slope holds manta cleaning stations at its southern end and reef at its north. Usually a gentle drift, it is one of the park's calmer places to see mantas.

Mawan is a small island in the centre of Komodo National Park, just west of Siaba Besar, with white beaches running down into the water. Below them a sandy slope scattered with rubble and coral bommies runs from about 5 to 25 metres, with reef at the northern end and manta cleaning stations on the bommies at the south.

The dive is usually a drift from north to south, finishing at the cleaning stations, where divers settle at a distance and watch the mantas circle in to be cleaned. Whitetip reef sharks are often seen too.

On most days the current is mild, which makes Mawan a relaxed manta dive for newer divers. Around the full and new moon it can pick up strongly, so less experienced divers should ask about the tides.
