About Kal's Dream

Kal's Dream is a submerged pinnacle northwest of Kepa Island in the Alor Pantar Strait, rising to about 5 metres and dropping to 40 metres. Current from the north hits it head on, so it is dived only when conditions allow, and it draws barracuda, dogtooth tuna, snapper and reef sharks.

Kal's Dream sits northwest of Kepa Island in the Alor Pantar Strait, the narrow gap where water from the Pacific pours south through the Indonesian Throughflow. Divers describe two rock pinnacles rising from deep water, with the shallower tops at roughly 2 and 5 to 7 metres and the walls falling away to about 40 metres. The current arrives from the north and strikes the rock straight on. Much of the time the site is simply too wild to enter, so boats wait for slack or a favourable tide before dropping in.

When it is diveable, the pinnacle holds fish in numbers. Reports from the site list red snapper, surgeonfish, dogtooth tuna, giant trevally, jacks, sweetlips, Napoleon wrasse, barracuda and reef sharks, with hammerheads turning up on occasion. Moray eels, scorpionfish, shrimps and nudibranchs work the rock itself. Visibility can reach 30 metres. The shallow top of the seamount doubles as a safety stop, which is useful on a site where divers stay close to the structure and out of the blue.
