About Mioskon

Mioskon is a sloping reef around a small island at the east end of the Dampier Strait, from about 5 to 25 metres, known for tasselled wobbegong sharks under its ledges, schooling snappers and pygmy seahorses. Its easy conditions make it a favourite first dive.

Mioskon takes its name from a small island at the eastern end of the Dampier Strait, in central Raja Ampat, also known as Bat Island for the fruit bats that roost in its trees. The reef slopes gently around the island from about 5 metres to a sandy bottom at 25 metres, with bommies and ledges along the way.

It is one of the best places in the strait to find the tasselled wobbegong, a shark found only in this part of the world, resting under ledges and in crevices among the coral and rock. Schools of snappers hang off the reef, and the bommies hide smaller life, including Pontoh's pygmy seahorses.

The current is usually light, though it can pick up, and boats often start on the current side so divers can drift towards the best stretch. The easy conditions make Mioskon a popular check dive and a good site for newer divers.
