About Blue Magic

Blue Magic is a submerged pinnacle in the Dampier Strait between Kri and Waigeo, its top at about 7 metres and its base near 30. Reef and oceanic mantas visit its cleaning station, wobbegongs rest on the rock, and the current can run strong.

Blue Magic is an isolated pinnacle in the eastern Dampier Strait, between Kri Island and Waigeo. Its top sits at about 7 metres and its sides, covered in sea fans, sponges and corals, fall to around 30 metres.

The top of the pinnacle is a cleaning station, and both reef mantas and oceanic mantas come in to be cleaned, sometimes staying for many minutes. Jacks and barracuda circle overhead, reef sharks patrol the tip facing the current, and tasselled wobbegongs rest on the rock and the sand below.

The current here is usually medium to strong and can change direction, so Blue Magic suits experienced divers. A reef hook helps you stay put at the cleaning station. October to April, when plankton fills the water, is the best time for mantas.
