About Biorock Pemuteran

Biorock Pemuteran, or Karang Lestari, is a coral restoration project off the beach at Pemuteran in northwest Bali, where low-voltage current helps coral grow on steel frames. It is a shallow, calm shore dive from 2 to 20 metres, good for night dives and snorkelling.

Biorock is a reef restoration project off the beach at Pemuteran, in northwest Bali. The local community started it in 2000, and with more than 70 structures it is one of the world's largest. A low-voltage electric current runs through steel frames and speeds up coral growth.

The frames lie from 2 to 20 metres, right off the shore, in calm water with little or no current. Corals, sponges, hydroids and tunicates cover the older frames.

Anemones with clownfish, Shaun the Sheep nudibranchs, seahorses, juvenile sweetlips, batfish, lionfish and turtles live among the structures, and garden eels in the sand nearby. It suits every level and is a favourite night dive.
