About Batu Abah

Batu Abah is a remote, exposed site off Nusa Penida's south-east coast, in the most protected zone of the marine reserve. Very strong currents and surge, a sheltered plateau, and big pelagics: mola, oceanic mantas, trevally and tuna.

Batu Abah lies off the south-east of Nusa Penida, further down the coast than the usual east coast sites, and can be seen from Atuh Beach. It is in the most protected zone of the Nusa Penida marine reserve.

The easier part is a plateau sheltered by the island, with many coral formations and a gently descending slope. Beyond it the currents can be sudden and changeable, with surge, and Bali Aqua warns the site can be extremely dangerous. Big pelagics are common: mola, sharks, oceanic manta rays, giant trevally and tuna.

Shops disagree on access. Bali Aqua and Scuba Center Asia say it needs authorisation or the local research team on board, while French Kiss Divers and Sober Diving sell it as a distant fun dive. Ask your shop before you plan on it.
