About Puri Jati

Puri Jati, known as PJ, is a black sand muck dive off a beach a few kilometres west of Seririt in north Bali. Its gentle slope to about 10 metres hides mimic octopus, frogfish, seahorses, ghost pipefish and sea moths, and you walk in from the beach.

Puri Jati, or PJ, lies on Bali's north coast near Bubunan, a few kilometres west of Seririt and about 10 kilometres from Lovina. It is a shore dive: you walk down the beach, put on your fins and swim out over a plain of black volcanic sand dotted with small cup corals.

The slope runs gently to about 10 metres, then drops more steeply past 20, but almost everything worth seeing is at 10 metres or shallower. The mimic octopus is the headline animal, joined by frogfish, seahorses, batfish, ghost pipefish, peacock mantis shrimps, snake eels, coconut octopus, dragonets, stargazers and sea moths. Visibility is usually around 10 metres.

It is an easy, shallow dive for any level, and a classic for macro photographers. Expect some litter on the sand.
